Best time to learn to fly in Sweden
How often the weather allows training flights in each month, from weather reports at 29 airfields with flight schools in Sweden.
Across 29 airfields, 65% of daylight hours have weather suitable for training flights. The best months are May, June, and July. December is the most difficult month, at 37%.
Share of daylight hours each month with weather suitable for training flights (cloud base at least 3,000 ft, visibility at least 5 statute miles / 8 km, wind no more than 20 knots, no thunderstorms, freezing conditions or snow).
The flying year in Sweden
Sweden has one of the strongest seasonal swings in our data. Across 29 airfields with flight schools, the typical one is flyable in 65% of daylight hours over the year, but that ranges from 87% in June to 37% in December.
Our figures count daylight hours only, so the winter is even harder than the percentages suggest: in December there are few daylight hours, and fewer than four in ten of them are flyable.
Where the weather is best
The differences between regions are small. Airfields inland and on the east side, such as Linköping, Luleå and around Stockholm, do slightly better than Skåne and the west coast around Gothenburg.
Planning your training
Plan the flying part of your training for May to August, when the long days and stable weather make it possible to fly almost every day. Many students do the theory during the winter.

How we worked this out
Based on hourly weather reports (METAR) from 2016 to 2025 in the Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive, at the weather station closest to each airfield and no more than 30 km away. Only daylight hours count. For each month we show the typical (median) airfield, with the middle half of airfields as the range.
