The flying year in Germany
At the typical German airfield in our data (18 airfields with flight schools), the weather allows training flights in 72% of daylight hours. The year has a long, reliable season and a short, difficult winter.
From April (82%) to September (83%) every month is above four-fifths, with June to August the best. November (59%), December (49%) and January (46%) are the hardest months, when fog and low cloud are common, especially in river valleys and on the northern plain.
Where the weather is best
The south-west does best: Baden-Württemberg has the most flyable weather in our data, and Stuttgart and the airfields around the Upper Rhine near Mannheim and Worms rank highest. Schleswig-Holstein in the far north has the least.
Planning your training
A spring start fits the German weather well: the theory can be done over the winter, and the flying from April onwards. Students who start flying in late autumn should expect long gaps between lessons until March.

How we worked this out
Based on hourly weather reports (METAR) from 2016 to 2025 in the Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive, at the weather station closest to each airfield and no more than 30 km away. Only daylight hours count. For each month we show the typical (median) airfield, with the middle half of airfields as the range.
