Best time to learn to fly in Spain

How often the weather allows training flights in each month, from weather reports at 16 airfields with flight schools in Spain.

Share of daylight hours each month with weather suitable for training flights (cloud base at least 3,000 ft, visibility at least 5 statute miles / 8 km, wind no more than 20 knots, no thunderstorms, freezing conditions or snow).

The flying year in Spain

Spain has some of the best flight training weather in Europe. Across 16 airfields with flight schools, the typical one is flyable in 87% of daylight hours, and even the worst months stay around four-fifths.

Summer is close to perfect, with July and August at 97% and 96%. The winter months are lower, around 76% in January and 80% in March, but still better than the summer months in much of northern Europe.

Where the weather is best

Andalucía and Catalonia have the most flyable weather; Málaga, Seville and Córdoba in the south and Sabadell near Barcelona all rank highly, as does Son Bonet on Mallorca. Galicia in the rainy north-west has noticeably less, and Castilla y León on the central plateau is in between.

Planning your training

Because winter is still good, Spain is a popular choice for students from northern Europe who want to train intensively outside their own flying season. In summer, inland airfields in the south get very hot, which reduces aircraft performance, so lessons often move to the morning.

Questions

Can you learn to fly in Spain in winter?

Yes. The typical Spanish airfield is still flyable in around 76% of daylight hours in January, more than many northern European airfields manage in summer.

How we worked this out

Based on hourly weather reports (METAR) from 2016 to 2025 in the Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive, at the weather station closest to each airfield and no more than 30 km away. Only daylight hours count. For each month we show the typical (median) airfield, with the middle half of airfields as the range.
