The flying year in Italy

At the typical Italian airfield in our data (13 airfields), the weather allows training flights in 82% of daylight hours. Summer is excellent, at 97% in July and 97% in August, and the season runs from March to September.

The winter months are much weaker, around 69% in January and 65% in February, and the national figure hides a big north–south difference.

North and south

Lazio, around Rome, has the most flyable weather in our data. The Po Valley regions in the north (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto) lose a lot of winter flying to fog and low cloud, which is well known among pilots there.

Planning your training

In the north, plan the flying part of your training for March to October. In central and southern Italy, winter training is far more realistic.

How we worked this out

Based on hourly weather reports (METAR) from 2016 to 2025 in the Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive, at the weather station closest to each airfield and no more than 30 km away. Only daylight hours count. For each month we show the typical (median) airfield, with the middle half of airfields as the range.
